Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a naturally occurring phospholipid found within the body. Phospholipids are important constituents of cell membranes with extensive functions in the human body. PS has been reported to be useful for cognitive improvement/enhancement and recovery in sports and physical training.
More specifically, Phosphatidylserine is thought to have positive effects on mental function and mood. There have been several studies on patients with Alzheimer’s which suggest they experienced improved mood and response times when taking PS.
The other benefits of PS use are associated with physical activity, as it has shown to promote a positive hormone balance. Improved recovery time coupled with reduced fatigue & muscle soreness (DOMS) has been reported after exercise. Furthermore, it is thought to exhibit anti-stress properties by decreasing elevated levels of cortisol, post-training. Cortisol is a hormone known for muscle breakdown and catabolism, and is also associated with weight gain if elevated for prolonged periods of time.
